The Philippine Embassy in Berne, Sentro Rizal Berne and the Knights of Rizal Switzerland commemorated the 127th martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal at Schaffhausen, a town in the northern part of Switzerland.  Dr. Rizal and his friend, Maximo Viola, stayed at the then Hotel Müller in Schaffhausen on 02-03 June 1887.

Philippine Ambassador to Switzerland Bernard Faustino M. Dy and other personnel visited places where Dr. Rizal had gone including the Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) close to the border with Germany.   Amb. Dy also met Knights of Rizal Switzerland East Commander Sir Stephan Urs Breu.  The Rizal marker in Schaffhausen was installed in December 1961 on the occasion of the 100th birth anniversary of Dr. Rizal.

It has been said that Dr. Rizal had always been fascinated by Swiss history and the legend of William Tell.   This inspired him to take a trip to Switzerland and translate into Filipino the play on the Swiss Folk Hero by Friedrich Schiller.
