Manila – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Wednesday warned the public against the proliferation of fake Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) receipts.
“The public should be well-advised on the matter for the safety of overseas Filipino workers
(OFWs),” said labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz.
Baldoz said the public must be on the lookout for groups or individuals who issue counterfeit
OWWA receipts.
“Benefits may be compromised if the OFWs’ names are not registered as OWWA members. OWWA members are assured of the social and protection programs and services offered by the agency,” Baldoz said.
The DOLE chief instructed OWWA Administrator Carmelita Dimzon to publish and post notices to the public in major dailies and in places frequented by OFWs to warn them about the fake receipts.
She further directed Dimzon to issue advisory to recruitment and manning agencies to institute internal control mechanisms to prevent any occurrence of the irregular and illegal practice.
For her part, Dimzon said that some manning agencies uncovered the anomalies done by their employees and reported this to OWWA.
“OWWA is now coordinating with the National Bureau of Investigation to help investigate all possible sources of these fake documents and bring to court those responsible,” Dimzon said.
