CERN Donates Computer Equipment to the National Institute of Physics
of the University of the Philippines

Servers and network switches to be sent to the University of the Philippines
The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research, with the mandate of establishing a world-class fundamental physics research organization in Europe, has donated computer equipment to the National Institute of Physics at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, to strengthen the Philippines capability in experimental as well as theoretical high-energy physics.
On 27 February 2014, Ambassador Leslie Baja was invited to the official ceremony at the CERN Headquarters in Geneva to formalize the consignment of the donations. The ceremony was opened by Professor Rolf Heuer, Director-General of CERN and Ambassador Leslie Baja. Ambassador Baja expressed his appreciation and enthusiasm for the project.
CERN will send fifty (50) servers and forty (40) network switches to the U.P. Physics Institute. The equipment will be used for various high energy physics research programmes in the Philippines and for the University’s development of digital resources for science.
On 26 October 2011, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the University of the Philippines and CERN’s CMS-LHC (Compact Muon Solenoid-Large Hadron Collider) Experiment. Dr. Caesar A. Saloma, Chancellor, University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) signed on behalf of UPD, and Prof. Albert de Roeck signed on behalf of CERN, during the latter’s visit to PHL last 24-26 October 2011.
