New Philippine Ambassador to Switzerland Joselito A. Jimeno presented today, 13 October 2015, his Letter of Credence to Swiss President and Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga.

During the call, Ambassador Jimeno said that he welcomes his posting to Switzerland and looks forward to furthering Philippine-Swiss relations. He then updated President Sommaruga on the developments in the West Philippine Sea, and said that Switzerland, being a champion of neutrality and an expert in mediation and good offices, could potentially play an important role in helping manage the tensions in the region.

 

For her part, President Sommaruga inquired about the peace process in the Philippines. In response, Ambassador Jimeno updated the Swiss President on developments in the peace process and expressed appreciation for Switzerland’s support, particularly in chairing the Transitional Justice and Reconciliation Commission. He welcomed Switzerland’s appointment of a special adviser to the Swiss ambassador to the Philippines on security issues, including the peace process.

Ambassador Jimeno also mentioned that the Philippines will have its elections next year and added that Switzerland might wish to send observers to the country to see how democracy works and is alive in the Philippines.

President Sommaruga expressed hope for the early conclusion and signing of the Philippine-EFTA free trade agreement. She added that the PH-EFTA FTA will be advantageous for both the Philippines and Switzerland, as the agreement will redound to the improvement of economic and trade relations between the two countries.
